During a recent Jane’s Addiction concert, lead singer Perry Farrell fought with guitarist Dave Navarro on stage, leading the show to come to an abrupt end. Etty Lau, Farrell’s wife, has now spoken out about the incident, says Far out magazine..
Jane’s Addiction were playing at the Leader Bank Pavilion in Boston when Farrell seemingly started a fight with his bandmate, attempting to punch Navarro. Members of the crew, as well as bassist Eric Avery, stepped in to stop the fight and the concert was brought to an end after 11 songs.
The band have not yet addressed the incident on their social media platforms. However, Farrell’s wife of over two decades, Etty Lau Farrell, has now spoken out about the fight on her Instagram account, bringing context to the odd situation.
“Rather than speculating, I thought to post a first person account of what happened on stage,” the post began. Etty went on to detail the tension and frustrations that had been building within the band long before the Boston show.
“Clearly there had been a lot of tension and animosity between the members,” she commented, “the magic that made the band so dynamic. Well, the dynamite was lit. Perry got up in Dave’s face and body checked him.”
“While Dave was keeping Perry at arm’s length to de-escalate the situation. Dan rushed over to de-escalate as well by holding Perry back,” Etty explained, “Dave walked away to take his guitar off. Eric walked up to Perry, upstage, in the dark, behind Dan, put Perry in a headlock and punched him in the stomach three times.”
She explained that Farrell’s frustrations had been “mounting, night after night,” due to sound issues, tinnitus, and a sore throat. She suggested that it was only when the audience complained about the sound that he “lost it”. According to Etty, Farrell was still a “crazed beast” and cried after the fight had been de-escalated.
The Boston show formed part of the band’s ongoing tour of North America, which is scheduled to last until the middle of October. The band have dates booked in across the United States for the next month or so, including appearances at Indy Jazz Fest in Indianapolis and South Star Festival in Huntsville.
Jane’s Addiction’s next show is scheduled for tomorrow, September 15th, at the Hartford HealthCare Amphitheatre in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The band have not shared any statements about the incident yet, nor have they addressed the future of the tour.
