While the support acts for the Oasis reunion tour are yet to be announced, Liam Gallagher has expressed a desire for Richard Ashcroft to be on the bill.
Ashcroft has a storied history with Oasis, and both Gallagher brothers. Most notably, he was the inspiration behind the Oasis classic, ‘Cast No Shadow’. During an interview in 1995 with Select, Noel said of the song meaning, “I always felt he was born at the wrong time and in the wrong place, and he was always trying to say the right things, but they came out wrong.”
For Ashcroft, it was a great compliment to be the muse behind such an iconic piece of music, telling MTV in 1997, “I think that’s a song for everyone, I don’t think it’s necessarily just for me because, without a doubt, it’s one of the best songs that he’s ever written in my book. Maybe, I’m a little bit biased. You can’t be anything other than honoured because he’s a great songwriter. Amazing songwriter.”
Furthermore, in recent years, Liam and Ashcroft teamed up in 2022 for the collaborative single, ‘C’mon People (We’re Making It Now)’. Additionally, when Liam headlined Finsbury Park in 2018, Ashcroft appeared on the bill as a special guest.
The Verve first played with Oasis in 1993 back when both bands were unknown. Four years later, they supported Oasis for two shows at London’s Earls Court when Oasis were the biggest group in Britain, and The Verve were firmly en route to join them at the top.
Therefore, due to their tale dating back for more than 30 years, Ashcroft supporting Oasis next year would be a fitting choice and add yet another chapter to their shared history.
After a fan on X asked if Ashcroft would be supporting Oasis in the United Kingdom in 2025, Liam was responsive to the idea, replying, “That would be BIBLICAL”.
This also aligns with a recent report from The Independent, which stated a source close to the band claimed, “Liam is keen for established acts so it will probably take a bit of back and forth before anything’s confirmed.”
One act that can be ruled out of supporting Oasis in 2025 is Fontaines D.C. after two members of the band criticised the comeback.
In a new interview with Studio Brussel, Carlos O’Connell and Conor Deegan were quizzed on their feelings regarding the reunion with O’Connell stating, “Couldn’t really give a shit, to be honest.”
Deegan elaborated: “I’m not excited about it either, to be honest. I feel like we kind of get caught in the last era, like the 2010s, in such a nostalgic thing that we were forgetting to make new things. I feel like what we wanted to do with this record (Romance) anyway where we make our minds look into the future, making new things. So for Oasis to reform at this moment for us, it’s really annoying.”
News of their words soon spread to Liam, who took to X, to share his thoughts on the Irish band, stating, “Fuck them little spunkbubbles I’ve seen better dressed ROADIES.” In another post, the Oasis frontman also claimed, “They look like a shit EMF”.
However, Fontaines D.C. frontman Grian Chatten has since distanced himself from the comments made by O’Connell and Deegan, writing on Instagram, “I love Oasis. This is not my opinion.”
