Before he stood behind the camera, he was a lover of movies and never hid his passion. He has been a lifelong advocate for global cinema, and his organization has restored classics that would otherwise have been lost forever.
Although he has come under fire for criticizing Marvel movies and their dominance in the market, Scorsese remains consistent in his stance on film education. He often emphasizes that it is important for young artists to pay attention to film education.
During an interview with the Criterion Collection, the director was asked to list ten cinematic masterpieces that have influenced his path as a director. While other guests briefly described their choices, Scorsese wrote mini-essays for each of his picks.
He revealed that he had always been personally fascinated by an Italian film. It is about the historical drama from 1963 directed by Luchino Visconti – “Leopard”.
Scorsese stated: “Another masterpiece about Sicily, another meditation on eternity, an infinitely rich historical tapestry, carefully composed in color and on 70mm. In fact, time is the real protagonist in Leopard: the cosmic dimension of time, centuries and epochs o which the prince thinks about; Sicilian time, in which the days and nights stretch into infinity; and the aristocratic time, in which nothing is in a hurry, and everything happens exactly as it should, as it has always happened.”
