System of a Down’s “Toxicity” Reaches One Billion YouTube Views

Vice

The title track from System of a Down‘s 2001 album Toxicity has officially surpassed one billion views on YouTube. This milestone follows the success of Chop Suey which is now nearing 1.5 billion streams.

The viral music video for “Toxicity” — which was uploaded to YouTube on October 2, 2009 — was co-directed by bassist Shavo Odadjian and Marcos Siega. It features the band performing in an all-white room, complete with shadowy projections and intense camera zooms that match the explosive energy of the song.

Back in 2002, “Toxicity” hit No. 7 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart and peaked at No. 70 on the Hot 100. Nearly two decades later, the song’s impact on both fans and pop culture is still going strong.

The band recently announced North and South American tour dates, including two Toronto stops.
